He might be tiny now, but tapirs can grow up to 2 metres in length, and weigh around 720lb. They’re related to both the horse and rhinoceros, and have very poor eyesight, so have to rely heavily on their amazing sense of smell and hearing.
Sadly, their population has decreased by more than half in the last 36 years due to loss of habitat and there are now just 2500 tapirs remaining. That’s why calves like Solo are so important – and they will help ensure that the adorable Tapir doesn’t become extinct!
