Hedgehogs and sausage dogs may not make the most natural of friends, but one family in Woking, Surrey are proving that there’s no need to be prickly.
Dachshunds Maya and Peanut have buddied up with African pygmy hedgehog Minnie to form an unlikely band. It looks like one-year-old Maya and puppy Peanut have rolled over to let 4-year-old Minnie be boss.
The trio have attracted a huge online audience of fans hooked on their ‘hedgedog’ antics. Whether they’re playing the piano, posing for pictures in outfits, or just chowing down on their favourite foods, there’s something insanely cute about this unconventional crowd.
Owner Natasha Fernandes, 43, regularly updates the Instagram account @mayathesausage, which has more than 28,000 followers.
Natasha says that the dogs are obsessed with Minnie, and will happily follow her all day. ‘They’ll follow her and try and engage with her, but she doesn’t always like to respond. Minnie doesn’t mind them and she likes to climb on their backs. She gets on with them really well and they follow her round like her own personal entourage!’
