It is illegal to set up these high voltage fences in areas where wild elephants live without permission. The District Forest Officer plans to bring charges against the landowner, as the offence is seen as a form of poaching and can be punishable by up to three years in prison.
Five elephants have been sadly killed in this way in the last six months alone, and something needs to be done to stop this. West Bengals Chief Minister says there needs to be tighter controls to address the balance between the number of wild elephants, and the locals’ livelihoods.
