A baby goat has been born in Assam, India with a very special feature.
Born in May 2017, the kid baffled local villagers who were shocked to see that it only had one eye.
Vets believe that the defect was caused by cyclopia, a rare anomaly that takes place during development in the womb. It occurs when the two hemispheres of the brain do not separate, and instead form a single cavity, which contains one eye or sometimes partially fused or separate eyeballs.
Sadly, as a result of the condition, which stops the brain from developing fully, vets do not expect the goat to live very long and were shocked to see the animal survive for more than a few hours.
There have been many other instances of animals being born with cyclopia in the past, including horses, pigs, cows, cats and even a dusky shark.
Aside from only having one eye, cyclopia can cause other physical deformities. In this case the baby goat has small upper and lower lips, a short jaw, missing teeth and just one ear.
Since the kids arrival, the goat’s owner Mukhuri Das has been inundated with visitors. Local villagers believe that this unusual animal is in fact sacred, and some people have even began to worship it.
He explains, ‘I was shocked. It’s like a miracle and people have been coming to our place to see this baby goat.’
‘It’s my responsibility to take care of the baby goat. I have been feeding him like a normal goat.’
‘It might be something from God that the baby goat was born in our house.’
‘So many people are coming to our place to see this baby goat. We are happy that it’s making us famous.’
