A 13ft Burmese python slithers over a baby in footage which is the stuff of nightmares for most parents – but for snake handler Jamie Guarino it’s simply a show of affection from a beloved family pet.
Jamie, 34, filmed daughter Alyssa, then 14 months old, with his 10-year-old pet snake Nay-Nay.
So what on earth is he thinking? ‘In this video, I was showing the simple fact that snakes are not evil creatures,’ explains Jamie passionately. ‘They can be a loving pet, despite their bad reputation. My daughter is absolutely in no danger.’
Jamie says that the video clip is usually met with fear or negativity, something which he cannot understand. ‘[The snake] has zero interest in biting her, swallowing her or choking her. This is an embedded fear, and I think people have been brainwashed…’
Having handled snakes since he was 16, dad-of-two Jamie sees the benefits of raising children around snakes and would love Alyssa and her 10-year-old sister to follow him in to the family business – he plans to open a reptile zoo with his daughters.
