47-year-old Carolyn Ekins from Nottingham was 25st and consumed around 5,000 calories a day prior to 2012.

But none of the big diets like Weight Watchers or Slimming World produced any results for her.

‘I was struggling, I was worried and my kids were really worried about me as well,’ says the single mum of three.

Then three years ago, history buff Carolyn turned to World War Two food rations for relief. She decided to spend the next year cooking up recipes from the 1940s – using the adult weekly ration including two small meat chops, 2oz of cheese, 4oz of margarine, 4oz of cooking fat, three pints of milk and lots of vegetables!

Carolyn searched the wartime Ministry of Food leaflets and ration books for ideas. Soon she was resurrecting forgotten old classics like Lord Woolton pie, Brown Betty, vinegar cake and even mock turkey – made from sausage meat with two parsnips acting as the legs.

Her diet of authentic wartime recipes for the year not only saved her thousands of pounds, but also lost her almost 6st!

‘To begin with, it kind of felt like it was a little bland, but after a week or two you get used to it and then you really appreciate the flavours,’ Carolyn explains.

It hasn’t been easy, but Carolyn is determined to keep going with her crusade, only having achieved half of her goal, and also hopes to inspire other struggling women to take the rations diet.

‘If it could help someone in the long run, I’d be really happy about that,’ she smiles.
