Tara Sawyer is so addicted to the ‘buzz’ of being pregnant that she has babies for strangers and she says she’s going to do it for as long as she can.
The 37-year-old has given birth to seven children, four of whom are her own, and is at her happiest with a bulging baby bump. When she isn’t expecting, Tara feels empty and broods for a pregnancy – but not for a baby.
‘As soon as we got the first pregnancy test that came through positive, I knew I was hooked,’ she says.
In the past two years, Tara, who has the support of husband, Matt, 37, has handed over three children to two couples, and has no plans to stop having babies for other people. And despite surrogacy laws stating that she is entitled to at least £15,000 in expenses, Tara, from Cambridgeshire, is content purely with the ‘thrill’ and is happy to do it for free.
‘I don’t think I’m going to stop being a surrogate for a long time. I think it’s something that I’ve now got so attached to,’ she says. ‘I’ve always just loved having the big belly and having people coo over the precious little gift inside and being really, really healthy.’
Tara was herself adopted and she wants to give something back to the couples who can’t have children, like her parents couldn’t.
As for having to part with the baby after carrying it for nine months, Tara says that she has no problem with that. ‘I wouldn’t see this as ever handing a baby over. This is handing a baby back. I’ve just babysat it for nine months.’
