Arya is a bright boy who longs to run and play like other 10-year-olds. But he is being held back – by his 30st body.
In this shockingly sad video, Arya Permana and his mum describe how he went from a normal sized baby to weighing more than six times the average for a boy of his age.
It wasn’t until he was 8 that he started putting on weight, and that accelerated in the past two years. Arya has put on 11st in the last year alone.
Morbidly obese Arya, from Indonesia, can barely walk, doesn’t fit into clothes, and he has to bathe in a special outdoor pool. Unsurprisingly, when asked what his one wish would be, he doesn’t hesitate to say that he wants to be a normal weight – like his brother.
So, how did he get in such a bad way? Surely it must be down to an underlying medical condition? Not according to the doctors Arya’s mum Rokayah has spoken with. They merely advised that he cuts down on the amount he eats. While Arya now eats three small plates of food a day, he admits that he used to have five meals a day – with two plates each time.
Now eating a diet of brown rice and fruit, with small portions, it is hoped Arya, dubbed ‘the world’s fattest boy’, might shed some of the excess weight, but he currently finds it impossible to exercise. In fact, he’s not even able to make it to school, such is the pain of walking, and so is home-schooled.
His teacher Sukesem can see his potential. ‘Arya always ranked well in class… he was always the top student, but his condition brings him down… He is a good student, diligent, a good listener and good at remembering what the teacher says.’
It can only be hoped that Arya can get his body back to a normal size to give him a chance of fulfilling his potential.
