Emma Orbach once lived with her family on a farm, but as she explains to a camera crew in this video she answered nature’s call to lead a simpler life out in the untamed wilderness and live off the fat of the land.
She lives in a round house she built herself out of wood, mud and straw in the Welsh countryside, and fixes any damages herself.
For the last 13 years of her life, Emma has lived in her hut without gas, electricity or running water regardless of weather, temperature or season.
Using natural resources, she has established a comfortable life for herself. She heats her home with a roaring fire, dries her clothes by hanging them from branches and sources as much food as possible from the land by growing her own vegetables.
‘I wouldn’t dig up potatoes for three days’ time because everything tastes different if it’s only been in the ground a few minutes before you eat it,’ Emma explains as she prepares her evening meal.
She also gets eggs from her chickens, milk from her goats and uses a horse and cart for transport. Rigidly sticking to her rejection of the modern world, Emma refuses to allow tractors onto her land whenever she can.
Emma believes that there is much joy and peace to be gained from living off the grid, and hopes to inspire as many people as possible to join her.
‘I feel that the rest of my life will be dedicated to trying to help humans come back to some sort of balance and harmony in the way that they exist upon this beautiful planet.’
