Pet food company IAMS asked over 2,000 pet owners to vote for their all-time favourite pets of the big screen. So here they are, the top ten cats and dogs of all time...
Only one of four cats and dogs to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Lassie’s first film, Lassie Come Home, was filmed in 1943. Lassie was played by a dog called Pal who went on to star in six other films until 1951. In 1954, it became a TV series – and over the next 19 years, a succession of Pal’s descendants also appeared as Lassie.
Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Parks had been sketching and making up stories about these two while he was a student at the National Film and Television School, but it wasn”t until Christmas Eve 1990, that ‘A Grand Day Out’ was first shown on Channel 4. The rest, as they say, is history…
3. Scooby Doo
First shown on Saturday mornings in 1969, in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! , Scooby-Doo is a talking Great Dane. Along with four teenagers—Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, they spend their time solving mysteries.
4. Pongo, 101 Dalmations
We all know and love the story of Pongo, and his canine partner Perdita, who are mum and dad to 101 gorgous puppies! While the hated Cruella de Vil literally wants their hides to make into a coat, Pongo is the hero, protecting the pups from her evil clutches. Disney turned the 1956 novel into an animated film in 1961, and it was remade into a live action film in 1996.
5. Tramp, Lady & The Tramp
This romantic tale of Lady, a sheltered uptown Cocker Spaniel dog, and our hero, Tramp, a streetwise downtown mongrel, was brought to the screen by Walt Disney in 1955…and no one will ever forget that legendary spaghetti sharing scene!
1. Puss in Boots, Shrek
Fear me, if you dare! Based on the fairy tale character of the same name, Puss, voiced by Antonio Banderas, made his first appearance in 2004 as a baddie in Shrek 2, but he soon becomes an ally of both Shrek and Donkey – and together they go on to see off all the baddies!
Garfield The Movie was released in 2004. Garfield is a lazy, fat and cynical orange cat who loves lasagna and coffee, and amongst many things, hates Mondays and raisins. He eats a lot, sleeps a lot – and we love him!
3. Tom Cat, Tom & Jerry
We love Tom because no matter how hard he tries, he is always completely upstaged and outwitted by his nemisis, Jerry, a tiny brown house mouse. He first appeared in 1940, so we’ve all grown up with this lovable anti-hero!
4. Thomas O’Malley, The Aristocats
We met the delightful Mr Thomas O’Malley in 1970 in the Disney film The Aristocats. This feral cat befriends Duchess and her kittens, becoming a father figure to the kittens and falling in love with Duchess. What a guy!
5. Top Cat, Hanna Barbera
C’mon – sing along – we know you know the tune…
Top Cat, the most effectual
Top Cat, who’s intellectual
Close friends get to call him T.C.
Providing it’s with dignity
Top Cat , The indisputable leader of the gang
He’s the boss, he’s the pip
He’s the championship
He’s the most tip top, Top Cat
Yes he’s the chief, he’s the king
But above everything
He’s the most tip top, Top Cat, Top Cat!
Thanks to IAMS for conducting the survey!
