You look back at a photo of yourself and you’re wearing ankle warmers, a leotard and a sweat band, and you’re not even working out! You think certain looks, trends and objects will never see the light of day again. But these have. Also, even though it hasn’t made our list, if you still have a lava lamp in the loft, dust it off and get it checked by a qualified electrician (safety first) and plug the thing in. It’s groovy all over again!
Hairdos and don’ts…
Elvis had a great one, and Cliff Richard did a pretty good me-too copy of it, but that was in the 50s! So why are they back now? Yes, Brooklyn Beckham and Zayn Malik (before his head shave) we mean you amongst others!
2. Full beards
We’re not talking designer stubble here, but full-on Brian Blessed type face fungus! Once youthful-looking lads, like TOWIE’s Ricky Rayment, look anything but baby-faced! Thankfully, he’s now shaved off that ugly fuzz for the Cure Parkinson’s Trust and Pancreatic Cancer Action.
3. Crazy-coloured locks
It’s no ‘mystery’ that punk singer Toyah Willcox had some vivid, vibrant locks back in the 80s, and the likes of Kelly Osbourne and Katy Perry are rocking some bright barnets these days!
Top Gear (not!)…
4. Ripped jeans
Page 3 favourite Sam Fox loved a bit of torn up denim in the 80s. Fast forward to a sofa in Sandwich, Kent, and Goggleboxer Steph has some more discreet knee rips in her jeans.
5. Skyscraper shoes
Did we learn nothing from Naomi Campbell’s tumble on stage in 1993? Seems not, as ankle-breakers are well and truly back, and crippling women all over again! And, even though Victoria Beckham shouldn’t be wearing them, she’s always seen it seriously high spikes!
We think these denim monstrosities should really only be worn by children’s TV presenters and Bob the Builder! But no, they’re back on trend. We’ve even seen Alexa Chung in some, so they must be en vogue!
On 13 April this year an official vinyl chart was launched. And Noel Gallagher’s band, The High Flying Birds, were top with their best-selling album and single in the first three months of the year. UK vinyl LP sales reached 1.29 million, which is the highest in 20 years. Better wind up that gramophone!
8. Mega-sized earphones
For ages, you couldn’t even see earphones, they were so dinky. Now they’re mega-sized again and people wearing them look like they’re about to land a plane, not listen to Madonna (oh, yes, she’s back in fashion, too! Did she ever go out! See below…)
9. Non-stop recording
We mean that annoying habit of someone lurking and recording every minute of dull family life, then showing it to people who don’t care! This used to be done on camcorders when your dad thought he was Steven Spielberg. Now, though, everyone’s doing it on their phones.
Always on trend…
These three (well, four, sort of) seem to have been in fashion for decades…
First: Madonna’s hit Holiday reached No.2 in the UK in 1984.
Latest: Madge fell off stage spectacularly at the Brits this year while performing Living For Love from her new album Rebel Heart.
First: Kylie Minogue showed up as Charlene Robinson in Neighbours on 17 April 1986.
Latest: Kylie released new single Right Here, Right Now! this year, and is set to headline British Summer Time in Hyde Park this June.
Ant and Dec
First: Declan Donnelly started in Byker Grove at the beginning in 1989, and Anthony McPartlin joined in the second series in 1990. After a short-lived pop career, the pair were never seen again… Joking!
Latest: After the duo finished bringing us their latest series of Saturday Night Takeaway in April this year (another one has already been commissioned for 2016), they went straight on to present Britain’s Got Talent. We’re in no doubt they’ll be off to the jungle again come winter to amuse us on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! Oh, and they’ve also bagged 14 consecutive National Television Awards!
