We may get irritated by commercials interrupting our favourite shows on telly, but when they’re accompanied by a brilliant singalong tune, we’ll forgive them! We also give you the chance to hear some of our favourites from over the years…
Whoooa, Bodyform! Bodyform for you-oo! A bloke in our office was singing this, until he realised what the ad was for, then he went pink and shut up immediately!
2. Cadbury Fudge
A finger of fudge is just enough to make your day complete. A finger of fudge is just enough until it’s time to eat. It’s full of Cadbury goodness and very small and neat. A finger of fudge is just enough to give your kids a treat. But is it? We think they could easily scoff
3. Birds Eye Steakhouse Grill
A group of workmen in a van knew just what they wanted to accompany their Steakhouse Grill at the end of a busy day. This is them speculating, though… Will it be chips or jacket spuds? Will it be salad or frozen peas? Will it be mushrooms? Fried onion rings? We’ll have to wait and see. Hope it’s chips it’s chips, we hope it’s chips… Us, too…
A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play… Pretty unlikely really. But we’ll have one just in case…
Washing machines live longer with Calgon. Worth a try we suppose. This woman seems pretty impressed anyway!
Go Compare, go compare, when in doubt check them out, go compare! Sung by the large man with the strange moustache encouraging us to shop around online. Here he’s telling a cab driver to check out different mortgages.
7. Fairy Liquid
Hands that do dishes can feel as soft as your face, with mild green Fairy Liquid. With the amount of washing up we do, let’s hope that’s true!
8. McVitie’s Club Biscuits
If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit, join our club! We do and we did. Many times over!!!
9. Wall’s Cornetto
Just one Cornetto, give it to me, delicious ice cream, of Italy. Creamy vanilla and choco dream, give me a Cornetto, from Wall’s ice cream. The cheeky bloke on a gondola nicks it right out of the lady’s hand. We’d have given chase…
10. Glade Shake and Vac
Do the Shake and Vac and put the freshness back! This is undoubtedly our favourite of all! It’s the mix of a great song, a great dance and a bizarre concept. But we confess…we’ve done it (lots)!
11. Chicken Tonight
I feel like chicken tonight! Sang a group of diverse folk, along with dubious impressions of chickens. And, unfortunately, at the time, everybody felt compelled to copy the song along with the ridiculous arm movements.
The following are a collection of ads for soft drinks. These seem to be among the most-poplar of ad tunes. So do join in (and if you don’t know the words, we’ve put them there for you)…
12. Um Bongo
Way down deep in the middle of the Congo, a hippo took an apricot, a guava and a mango, he stuck it with the others, and he danced a dainty tango. The rhino said: ‘I know, we’ll call it Um Bongo!’ These bizarre and rather complex lyrics struck a chord, especially with the kids.
13. R White’s Lemonade
I’m a secret lemonade drinker. R White’s. R White’s. I’ve been tryin’ to give it up, but it’s one of those nights. R White’s, R White’s, R White’s Lemon-a-a-ade… This slightly sinister-looking ad, saw a man creeping around in the middle of the night in his PJS. But he was only after a little light refreshment.
14. Kia Ora
Kia-Ora… It’s too orangey for crows… It’s just for me and my dog. I’ll be your dog (barks). I’ll be your dog. Kia-Ora a doggy doggy doggy doggy. Kia-Ora… Arumba. We all adore a Kia-Ora. Well, that all makes perfect sense. It doesn’t – but we didn’t care!
I’d like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony. I’d like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company. That’s the real thing. This sentiment sung from a hilltop by many different nationalities is just as relevant today as it was when this ad came out in 1971.
