As advocates of healthy living, first-time parents Emily and Martell are convinced that what Emily is doing is good for her and of no harm to her baby. But some people are not so sure.

Emily has faced an online backlash from strangers criticising her for harming her unborn baby. Claims that Emily is quick to counter. ‘I never considered giving it up. My body has felt really great. It gives me so much energy so why would I think of stopping?

‘Pregnancy isn’t an illness,’ continues Emily. ‘The human body is capable of remarkable things. The negative stuff, I just have to look at it like it has to be some sort of jealousy and hate.’

Emily’s husband Martell, is fully supportive of her decision to carry on with the workouts she loves. ‘What an inspiration she’s been to not only myself but to hundreds and thousands of women across the country,’ he says. ‘I’m obviously cautious because I love her and I love the little guy in there and just want to make sure that everything is OK. I know if she didn’t do this, it would drive her crazy as well!’

Having the full support of her doctors has meant that Emily not only feels confident enough to continue to lift weights and practice crossfit – weightlifting, gym and intensive cardio – but also to encourage other mums-to-be to have active pregnancies. ‘I don’t think pregnancy is really a disease or a time to alter things as in you can’t do them any more,’ she says.

Looking forward to post-pregnancy, Emily says, ‘Our hopes are to get him here healthy. I can’t wait to meet this boy – that is the first and foremost – and we’re looking forward to raising him in an awesome and healthy environment.’
