It creeps up on you... But before you know it, a night out means a quick pizza and home to bed by 10pm. Then here are the other signs that our nights out aren't quite what they used to be.

1. Coats

Back in the day…

We used to go to local clubs and queue up outside for hours in skirts and short sleeve tops without a jacket, just to avoid the line at the coat room!

These days…

A very different story! We don’t leave the house for a night out without a coat, a scarf and an umbrella in case it spots.  Even if its a summery evening, we’ll take a thin jacket or cardigan. Well, it gets a bit nippy after the sun goes in…

2. Shoes

Back in the day…

We would feel totally underdressed without a pair of towering heels. They made us look older, slimmer and taller! With burning bunions and blisters forming, we would power through the night till we were strolling through the streets to the taxi rank, barefoot, to get a cab. Those strappy four-inchers were a killer!

These days…

We don’t even leave the house without packing a spare pair of flip-flops or ballet pumps for later. And we probably only last till about 10pm before the flats come out. Nice ‘n’ comfy is the key to a good night out these days. And even then we can still moan of tired feet!

3. Handbag

Back in the day…

A clutch bag was the all we needed for our money, phone, mascara and a box of fags. Maybe a bit of bronzer and eyeliner too if there was room. But the smaller the bag the better – less to swing around on the dancefloor when we was throwing those dance moves.

These days…

A sturdy, practical bag with a nice big zip and a decent shoulder strap is a must. We need our diary, a large smart phone, a phone charger, and of course, that spare pair of flats. Not to mention an umbrella, hairbrush, selection of hair clips and bands, hand cream, hand sanitiser, plasters, a small first aid kit, a bottle of water, a pack of pocket tissues… You get the idea!

4. Drinks

Back in the day…

Drinking cider and black and using our student loan to go out for the third time that week. Or making the full use of the happy hour and pound a drink offers. Or downing cheap wine by the bottle adding a spritz of lemonade to make it palatable. Finishing with cheap shots and usually one of us needing regular stops in the cab on the way home…

These days…

Out for our once-in-a-blue-moon girly night out (usually special occasions only these days) we make the last half of the happy hour for BOGOF cocktails if we’re lucky. But after that, only having the one glass of wine as it gives us a ‘head’ the next day.  Must remember that a small bottle of mineral water on the way home to re-hydrate!

5. Knickers

Back in the day…

Thongs. Thongs were the only way. The sight of a VPL under our £29.99 lycra Morgan dress was one of the worst faux pas you could make so it was g-strings all the way. The 3 for 2 deal at La Senza were a must! Frilly, silky, multi-coloured leopard print or spots – with matching bra of course!

These days…

Nothing says comfort like a good FULL BRIEF! Marks & Spencer and Primark do a great range of comfy full briefs in sensible practical colours. And forget VPL – there’s no chance of that with the giant, beige, cycling short style, stomach-holding-in-pants we have these days. Hello Mummy!

6. The dancefloor

Back in the day…

We didn’t sit down till we fell down! Dancing our socks off to our favourite songs, we never left the dancefloor. Limboing, boogying round handbags, we only stopped to go to the bar.

These days…

We won’t go anywhere without pre-booking a booth first. And not in the main club room, much too loud. We need somewhere we can sit down and have a good old chat. ‘Somewhere we can hear ourselves think...’ And maybe order the odd nibble or two…

7. After parties

Back in the day…

We didn’t want the night to end. If we weren’t going on the next club, it was an after party back at a ‘friend of a friend’s’ – with us often not making it home till the next day! Remember the walk of shame from the taxi to your front door in last night’s going out clothes at 9am? While your next-door neighbour is already up and about early cutting their grass, waving to you across the hedge…

These days…

Nights out rarely make it past the last bus home. And that includes leaving early for a McDonalds. Better still all leaving a bit early to pile back to a friends house for cheese on toast in pyjamas. Plus nothing rounds a good night off like a nice cup of tea when you get in and maybe a few biscuits as a treat…

8. Hangover

Back in the day…

We would think nothing of going out drinking a few nights in a row, or out multiple times in one week. All while feeling breezy the next morning and completing a week at college and all our homework assignments (…well most of our homework assignments).

These days…

We can barely make it out the house the next day after one night out, and usually that’s us done for the week! One good night out is enough to knock us for six. We end up telling everyone at work ‘oh I’m so tired from a big night out’ …that happened FOUR DAYS AGO!

All I can say these days is at least in our old age we’ve learnt to handle our drink… Ahem!
