London's full of fame and fortune, but what about the borough of Barnet, situated to the north-west of the capital? You might be surprised to hear the suburban area's seen its fair share of famous residents, past and present!
1. Emma Bunton
The former Spice Girl was born in Finchley in 1976, and attended Barnet College as a girl. She now lives in East Barnet with her fiance, singer Jade Jones.
2. Tony Blackburn
Although born in Guildford, Surrey, radio DJ Tony has lived with his family in the small village of Arkley, close to High Barnet, for several years.
3. Spike Milligan
Comic genius Spike moved to a huge mansion near Hadley Wood back in 1974. The house is said to have hosted the likes of Prince Charles and Peter Sellers over the years, among other famous faces.
4. Johnny Vaughan
Born in Chipping Barnet, the TV and radio presenter spent his early years in Totteridge, and still has fond memories of the area – although he now lives in Fulham.
5. Amy Winehouse
The late singer was born in Southgate, which is situated between the boroughs of Barnet and Enfield, and went on to live in Whetstone for many years.
6. George Michael
Singer George (whose birth name was actually Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou!) was born in East Finchley. His Cypriot father had moved over to England in the 50s.
7. Elaine Paige
Born in Barnet back in 1948, the musical theatre star went to school in Oakleigh Park, before attending the Aida Foster Stage School, also situated within the borough. Her mother, a milliner, owned a hat shop on Barnet high street!
8. Anthony Andrews
Actor Anthony was born and brought up in North Finchley. He went on to marry Georgina Simpson, of the Simpsons of Picadilly department store family. La de dah!
9. Trevor Howard
Although born in Margate, Kent, actor Trevor lived in Arkley village with his wife until his death in 1988. He was buried in the local Saint Peter’s Church.
10. Arsene Wenger
The France-born Arsenal manager lives in a rather large house in the ‘London’s Beverly Hills’ area of Totteridge.
11. Jerry Springer
The US chat show host was born in a tube station in 1944 during a Nazi bombing raid. There are mixed reports over the exact station in which he was born, but many say it was East Finchley tube, in our very own Barnet!
