1. Don’t poke their heads!

Chihuahuas have soft spots on their heads called a molera, very much like a human baby. Unlike a human’s where it fuses together, some of them have their soft spots for their entire lives. Heads up! Not for these mutts!

 

2. There are two different types of Chihuahua

This depends on the shape of their heads. Deer-head Chihuahuas have narrower-shaped head and longer snouts. Apple heads have rounder heads with shorter snouts. Either way, they’re still extremely cute!

 

3. Don’t mess with them!

Although they’re small, they can be very aggressive and protective. To combat this, owners are told to socialise them at an early age. So do this in case you find yourself chasing yours attached to a Dalmatian’s tail in your local park!

Experts say that Chihuahuas originated in Mexico, but there is still some debate about how they got to Europe. Some people think Christopher Columbus may have had something to do with it because he once wrote a letter to the King of Spain referencing Chihuahuas. Worth more than gold? We think so!

 

5. They used to be much bigger

Earlier versions of the Chihuahua were much larger than the tiny pups we know today. They were later crossbred with a small hairless dog from Asia, some think it was the Chinese Crested. This is how they got their small stature but kept their big personality.

 

6. They’re the smallest dog in the world

Brandy (or if you prefer her full name, Heaven Sent Brandy) is the world’s smallest dog. Measuring 15.2cm (6in) from the nose to the tip of the tail, she lives in Largo, Florida with her owner Paulette Keller.

 

7. They’re from Mexico

The titchy dogs are descendants of a breed called the Techichi which were kept by the Toltec civilisation. The animals featured on pots dating back to 300BC from Colima, Mexico, buried in tombs, are thought to be Techichis.

 

8. A feral pack took over a town in Arizona in 2014

A feral pack of Chihuahuas ran around harassing the people of Maryvale, Arizona in 2014, chasing children and pooing where they pleased. Teaming up with bigger dogs, they terrorised local residents. Aye, Chihuahua!

 

9. They’re very clever

Reese Witherspoon’s pocket-sized hound Bruiser Woods in Legally Blonde was played by a dog called Moody. In Legally Blonde 2, Gidget played the part of Bruiser’s mum and also five Chihuahuas played Bruiser in Legally Blonde the Musical with Sheridan Smith in 2010.
