These critters may look sweet but beware! Behind their cuddly exteriors lurk deadly diseases, poisons and lethal attacks. Check out our top 10 cute deadly animals - you've been warned!
1. Slow Loris
Their huge, inviting eyes make you crave cuddles. Stop! This seemingly shy primate tops the list of cute deadly animals! They house a poisonous pouch in their elbows. If provoked, they’ll suck the poison into their mouths, then bite. If you’re allergic to the toxin, you could be dead within hours. Crikey!
2. Puffer Fish
Deceptively cute, this sneaky sea-dweller is to be feared. If threatened, they puff out spines that contain venom strong enough to paralyse your body, stop your lungs working, which results in death. Plus, if you eat improperly prepared puffer fish, it’s fatal… ‘Waiter! I’d like to change my order!’
3. Spur Winged Geese
Highly territorial, these beautiful birds are equipped with razor-sharp spurs on their wings which can cause seriously nasty injuries. If consumed, the birds are poisonous to humans, due to their diet of highly toxic Blister Beetles. So, don’t get in a flap – stay away!
4. Polar Bears
Cute and furry but be wary! They’ve the strength to rip the head off a human. The largest carnivore in North America, it’s believed they attack between 20-90 people each year. With no natural predator, they rule the ice caps undeterred!
They’re herbivores but will attack when provoked. Fiercely protective of territory, hippos kill 100s every year. They’ve tipped over boats causing drownings, and some witnesses report they’ve even bitten people’s heads clean off… Playing Hungry Hippos will never be the same again!
Closely linked to humans, cute as they are, chimps display a violent side over territory and potential mates in the wild. Even ‘trained’ pet chimps have turned on their owners. Injuries include shredded faces, broken bones and even hands torn off. Don’t monkey around with them!
With such loveable smiles, swimming with them tops many people’s bucket lists. Don’t slip on a wetsuit just yet! Known to attack their own young, they’ve also killed porpoises just to play with a carcass. Also, highly sexually competitive, males may be aggressive towards human males when a female dolphin’s present.
8. Duck Billed Platypus
Combining an unusual beaver-like tail, otter-like feet and duck-like bill is so cute! Yet, long hollow spurs on their rear legs contain a moderate toxin that can kill small animals. Though not typically fatal for a healthy human, it causes agonising pain that can last up to several months.
9. Siberian Chipmunks
While these cute critters aren’t physically threatening, they carry disease. They have transported Lyme disease and rabies to many parts of the world. If either disease is left untreated, heart and neurological problems can occur. In extreme cases, it can lead to coma and death.
You gotta be kitten me? OK! In themselves, cats aren’t cute deadly animals. But they carry Toxoplasmosis – a parasite that can infect humans via cat feces. Most people are unaffected or suffer mild, flu-like symptoms. However, those with a low immune system can experience fever, shortness of breath and even seizures.
