They’re the best days of your life apparently. Maybe, but there was a lot of stuff about being a pupil that we couldn’t stand. Here are just some of the things we loathed about our school days…

1. Hell’s Bell!

You’re on the way to school and can actually see the doors, you’re that close. But then you hear the bell and know you won’t make it to your classroom in time. Your heart sinks ‘cos you know you’re in for a rollicking.

2. Breaking Bad

Talking of break, it was supposed to be a time of welcome relief between lessons – but it’s more stressful than the classroom! Who will you hang out with and what if you’re left sitting on your own? Having friends is essential at school, but, as you can see from our next hated moment, finding the right mates isn’t easy…

3. The Gang’s All Here!

You long to belong in the cool crowd, but it just isn’t working out for you. You can see the ‘It’ girls in school looking down their noses at you, and realise that they have no intention of letting your hang out with them. You’ll just have to find other less trendy types to get in with.

4. Not A Good Sport

You were hopeless at sport and hated PE lessons. You were picked last for teams and you’d constantly let your side down by not scoring at netball or dropping the ball when it was thrown to you and you’d whack people accidentally during hockey and get banished to the sin bin. There was nothing jolly about hockey sticks as far as you were concerned.

5. That’s Plain Annoying!

School uniforms were so unattractive. Nasty pleated plaid skirts, boring white shirts and ties. Not to mention flat shoes and socks! And if you tried to customise or accessorise it, you’d get sent home and then get in trouble from your parents, too. Because they hadn’t seen you when you’d slipped out of the house that morning wearing non-regulation white socks!

6. Pretty depressing…

It’s not that you were a munter during your school days, it’s just that there were always much prettier girls. You’d eye them enviously, wondering how they could look so gorgeous with the restrictions of school rules. Seems they didn’t need to try and sneak on make-up or jewellery, they were just naturally gorgeous. Not fair!

7. Well, Fancy That!

Guess this won’t be too surprising, but the boys you fancied liked the gorgeous girls you’ve just mentioned. However, you did set your heights high by always getting a crush on the class hunk, who could have his pick of the girls. You did recently see a couple of the beautiful people at a school reunion and, you have to say, they don’t look quite as perfect these days!

8. Chews Life…

Everybody chewed bubblegum. You’d look odd if your jaw wasn’t constantly moving! What you hated was getting caught by teachers and being made to remove your gum. You knew if you got caught chewing again, you’d be given detention. Or worse, be sent to the Head. Which takes us to another dreaded school moment…

9. Heads Up

Being sent to the Head even for a first offence is terrifying. You hope you’ll get away without too much of a telling off. Another awful part is waiting outside their office waiting to be called in. You’re all alone and as people walk past, you feel so ashamed and embarrassed. You vow to be good from now on!

10. More Questions Than Answers

It was rare for you to put your hand up in class, but you’d normally only risk it when you’re sure you know the answer. So what went wrong this time? In front of the entire class, you went on to answer incorrectly and you’re mortified. Even the teacher says she was surprised to see you volunteering, which is why she chose you to answer. Well she won’t be doing that again!

11. What A Performance!

You were so pleased when you got a role in the school play. But it’s time to perform and you’ve just spotted the large crowd out front. Suddenly you’re in the wings with a bad bout of stage fright and your knees are knocking. However, your crowd awaits, so, with a deep breath, you go out to your public and pull off your role in spectacular fashion. And in the words of the Britain’s Got Talent judges: ‘You smashed it!” And the crowd are on their feet! Seems being at school did have its good points after all…
