With Wimbledon on telly recently, we were admiring the tennis players. Then we noticed that although Serena wasn’t playing as she’s pregnant, we still saw her on the TV in an ad for the Tempur-Pedic mattress! This got us thinking that for years, sports stars have been called upon to flog company’s wares. So here’s a bunch of fit folk selling stuff…

1. Serena Williams – Tempur-Pedic mattress

As we mentioned, Serena sleeps on the Tempur-Pedic mattress, because, apparently, the tennis champion is no stranger to pressure, so has chosen a Tempur-Pedic matress to relieve her pressure points all night, so she can wake up ready to win the day. Watch her do that now…

2. Serena and Venus Williams – iPhone

Here Serena is joined by her tennis-playing sister Venus in a rather strange doubles ping-pong tournament against an unknown opponent to promote the iPhone. Weird, but definitely watchable…

 3. Barry Sheene – Brut 33

Way back in the 70s, after his boxing career had finished, Sir Henry Cooper appeared in TV ads for Brut where Our ’Enry uttered the infamous words, ‘Splash it all over’, which became a popular catchphrase. Henry was joined by fellow sports stars motorcycle racer Barry Sheene and footballer Kevin Keegan in the ads. Barry Sheene joins him in this one…

4. Mo Farrah – Quorn

5. Brownlea Brothers – Yorkshire Tea

The in-demand triathlete brothers have done ads for Yorkshire tea and, more recently, appeared in Aldi’s summer campaign. But we like the Yorkshire Tea ad best, ‘Where Everything’s Done Proper’, we’re told. See the lads doing just that…

6. Gary Lineker – Walkers

Footballer, presenter, pundit and mega-salary earning Gary is now synonymous with Walkers crisps and their many other snack varieties. Since 1995, Gaz has appeared in over 100 ads for the company. It was hard to pick a favourite, so we chose the very first one he appeared in…

7. David Beckham – H&M

Footie legend Mr Beckham has been in stacks of commercials, but we make no apologies for choosing this H&M ad. It is of course, Dave in his pants! This provocative ad for his Bodywear Underwear range was directed by Guy Ritchie. The ad was highly anticipated when it premiered back in February 2013. We can see why…

8. James Hunt – Texaco

Not surprising that a petrol head racing-car driver would be advertising petrol, more intriguing is why he’s joined by TV’s favourite double act, Morecambe and Wise. Intriguing, yes, but entertaining, too. We’re sure you’ll agree!

9. Usain Bolt – Virgin Media

People want fast broadband connection and to show what if feels like to experience speed, Virgin Media thought they’d use the fastest man on the planet to show us. So look at Usain Bolt being really, really quick!

10. Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill – Santander

After her amazing performance at the 2012 Olympics, Jess became a Dame and was also signed up by the bank to advertise their services. Dame Jess appears very happy to extol the virtues of Santander’s 123 Credit Card…

11. Gareth Southgate (and pals) – Pizza Hut

This ad was tough for diehard footie fans to stomach at the time, as many hadn’t even begun to get over the disappointment… However, after missing the vital penalty in the 1996 European Football Tournament, Gareth Southgate went on to make this ad for Pizza Hut. He’s joined by fellow penalty-misser Stuart Peace & Chris Waddle for a delicious deep-pan treat. However, Gareth wants to hide his face but his two mates are still mocking him for it. Check them out…

12. Paul Gascoigne – McDonald’s

In a tongue-in-cheek ad, Geordie soccer ace Gazza dons a butcher’s apron and takes a pop at himself by trying to make a burger, as a voiceover explains how McDonald’s burgers are so simple, they chose someone `simple’ to demonstrate how to make them. Charming! See his simple demonstration for yourself…

13. Bradley Wiggins – Skoda

Skoda the car manufacturer would like to explain to us that drivers of their Kodiaqs are, like mega-successful cyclist Bradley Wiggins, driven by something different. We’re pleased that there’s room on the roof for his bikes…

Which is your favourite ad featuring a sports star…
