Rey becomes involved in fighting for the Resistance when she hooks up with runaway Stormtrooper Finn.

3. Hermione Granger – Harry Potter movies

Warner Bros

Warner Bros

You’re never too young to be a role model… Hermione Granger is, as we all know, the brightest witch of her age. She’s also brave and up for a wizarding duel with the best of them, taking on a gaggle of Death Eaters or helping save the magical world from the evil Voldemort. And up for landing a mean right hook on bully Malfoy’s nose, when push comes to punch.

4. Jane – The Legend of Tarzan

Rex Features

Rex Features

This latest Jane is anything but a damsel in distress – she’s more about female empowerment than previous incarnations. Feisty and ready to fight back, she can get herself out of a scrape without waiting for ’im indoors (or should that be ’im outdoors?). And, in an interesting role reversal, while Tarzan spends most of the film half-naked, this Jane keeps her clothes on….

Ex-KGB agent Romanoff, better known as Black Widow, is an ace spy and assassin. Now a member of SHIELD, the international counter-intelligence agency, she helps to fight for world peace and justice. And it seems likely martial arts expert Black Widow is set to get a movie of her own quite soon.

7. Daenerys Targerian – Game of Thrones

HBO

HBO

Another great character from GoT. This Princess starts out as meek and abused by her perverted and vicious brother, and forced into marriage with Khal Drogo of the Dothraki – the head of a warlike and barbaric tribe. But, in a surprising turn of events, Daenerys steps up to win her new husband’s heart and respect and become a true Dothraki queen – and Mother of Dragons. No fluffy kittens for this girl!

And behind every strong woman… there’s a strong woman!

Brienne: At 6ft 3in, Gwendoline Christie is perfectly cast as the warrior maid and she’s smart and talented in real life, too. She graduated from the Drama Centre London with a First Class BA (Hons), and has acted for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
